Lawmakers Form Diabetes Caucus
(IRN) -- Several state lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have banded together to help fight a prevalent disease.

State Rep. Will Davis (D-Homewood), a member of the newly formed legislative diabetes caucus, was diagnosed with type II diabetes in 2004. Davis says healthy habits are needed to ward off its onset, and he says all Illinoisans should have easy access to healthful food choices -- something that isn’t always the case in his district.

"In the city of Harvey, which has about 30,000 people, it's a predominately African-American community, there's not one full-service grocery store," Davis says. "Why is it that some communities have the access, and other communities don't?"

The group also aims to advocate for legislation that encourages healthy lifestyles. Many lawmakers on the diabetes caucus have either been diagnosed with diabetes themselves, or have family members who've been diagnosed.
