New Truck Arrives for GFD
The Galesburg Fire Department received a big delivery Monday.

Alexis Fire Equipment dropped off one of two new pumper trucks the department need to replace older trucks that were beginning to show their wear according to Fire Chief Tom Simkins.

"Well the biggest reason was the reliability of the older trucks, they both had over 110,000 miles on them, they were 1993 models and about 19 years old, and we were having some troubles with transmission difficulties and just some things that we were really starting to worry about the reliability of those vehicles, but having these here is really going to put a lot of that question aside."

The new truck, number 53, won't be in commission for another two weeks or so as all the fire crews are trained on the vehicle.

Many safety features were added to the new truck like covers for hose storage compartments and a light on the exterior of the truck indicating how much water is left in the larger 750 gallon tank.

Another identical truck will be delivered sometime this summer for the department.

The cost of the two trucks, about $730,000, was approved by the Galesburg City Council in December.
