Orpheum Roof Nows Needs Repaired
There's another item that needs to be replaced at Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre, but this time, Mother Nature is to blame.

Theatre president Kate Francis told the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board Wednesday the metal roof of what's called a stage relief hood was partially sheared off during Saturday's 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts that continued in the area.

Francis says the stage relief hood can provide just that, relief, in the event of a major emergency at the theatre.

"That is a portion of the roof that actually only goes into action when there's a fire on the stage, the fire curtain drops and these vents open in the ceiling then there's this, if you look at the back of the building, there's this pitched high... it's the highest elevation on the building that you can see from the road, that's the roof that got sheared off."

The hood, Francis says, essentially, in her words, suffocates fire so it can't spread.

Francis says no water can get in at this point, but since the hood is original to the 95 year old theatre, it likely was time to get it replaced anyway.

She says it's expected to cost around $10,000, and that requests for proposals are being developed.
