Quinn Encourages Green Living on Earth Day
(IRN)-On this Earth Day, Governor Pat Quinn says everyone can do more to help the environment, including the state.

For the first time, a state building has received an Energy Star award. The state's Michael A. Bilandic Building has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the award. The building was for decades the State of Illinois office building in downtown Chicago, built in the 1920s. The building increased its energy efficiency by nearly 68 percent since 2008, resulting in significantly reduced energy usage and energy cost savings of approximately $100,000 per year.

Quinn says the state is looking at other efforts to improve state owned buildings. He says there are plans to upgrade heating and cooling at the Thompson Center and the state is assessing other buildings at universities and colleges, looking to make them more energy efficient. Quinn would like lawmakers to support a plan to issue bonds to cover the cost of the work.

The Bilandic building serves approximately 25,000 people per month and houses Chicago offices for the Illinois Supreme Court and Appellate Court, as well as hearing rooms for the House and Senate.
