SIUC Asks for Help in Search for Missing Student
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- Officials at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale are asking for the public's help in finding a student who's been missing since Monday.

WSIU Radio reports that police don't suspect foul play as they search for 18 year old Michael Wiechmann.

SIUC Public Safety Director Todd Sigler says Wiechmann's parents contacted the university Wednesday night. They say their son sent them a handwritten letter from Anna in which he said school wasn't for him. The letter was postmarked April 18th.

Sigler says Wiechmann emptied his bank accounts and rented or purchased camping equipment. A roommate says Wiechmann had been researching areas of the Mark Twain National Forest and survival techniques in the wild on his computer.

Anyone with information should contact SIUC's Department of Public Safety at 618-453-3771.
