ISP Forensic Lab to be Built in Belleville by 2012
BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois State Police officials say a new planned lab in southern Illinois will enhance the agency's ability for forensic science analysis.

State officials say the $37.8 million lab in Belleville is expected to be constructed by late 2012.

State police spokesman Isaiah Vega says the facility will help create a more efficient and effective environment.

In 2009, Auditor General William Holland revealed the agency had a massive backlog topping 10,000 overdue tests.

Vega says there's still a backlog of about 8,600 tests. That includes DNA and forensic biology tests, among others.
