Crop Planting Not Really Progressing
(IRN) -- Farmers made scant progress in corn planting across Illinois last week.

That's according to the weekly USDA crop progress report, which finds corn planted advanced from 9 percent to 10 percent.

The problem: Too much rain, says crop statistician Mark Schleusener, who says farmers averaged one-half day of field work over the last week.

Last year at this time, two-thirds of the corn was in the ground, and the five-year average is 27 percent. However, Schleusener says it’s not time to panic yet. In 2009, corn planted by this time was 3 percent; in 2008 it was 4 percent. "While we're slow in April, a couple of good weeks of progress and we'll be right up where we oughta be," he said.

Schleusener says even if the rain stops today, which it won't, fields will need a few days to dry before farmers can get in them and plant.

From the report:

* Topsoil moisture: 34 percent adequate, 66 percent surplus
* Crop condition, winter wheat: 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 47 percent good, 9 percent excellent
