Abandoned Home Damaged by Fire
A Galesburg home that was slated to be gotten rid of anyway has been damaged by fire.

Fire Battalion Chief Bill Thomas says crews were called to 378 Ohio Avenue around 3:30 Monday afternoon after police officers noticed the home appearing to be fully engulfed in flames.

Thomas tells WGIL the abandoned home has a lot of debris inside, which can cause problems for firefighters.

"A lot of debris in the building does slow firefighters down," Thomas said. "Normally, we end up climbing across the top of [the debris]. A lot of times, when you have debris in the building, you can't get to the floor, so you end up on top of the clutter to get where we need to be."

Thomas says the home was slated to be demolished as part of the city's effort to deal with abandoned and unkempt properties, though officials say a caretaker mows the lawn.

Officials have since said the fire rekindled briefly around 11:30 Monday night, but was put out quickly.
