State Honors Workers on Their Memorial Day
(IRN)-About fifty people, union members who have died in the line of duty in the past year, were remembered at the Illinois State Library Thursday evening. The Springfield and Central Illinois Trades and Labor Council organized the ceremony, which preceded the laying of roses at the workers' memorial on the Capitol grounds across the street.

"You can't cut corners on the backs of workers," said Springfield-based labor leader Bill Looby, the keynote speaker. "In terms of OSHA funding, just to give you an example, it would take 94 years to inspect all the workplaces in the state of Illinois once."

Organizer Terry Reed, president of the council, says office workers who suffer the effects of asbestos are examples of those who do not have stereotypically dangerous jobs who can still die at work.
