Workers' Memorial Day Held Thursday
Thursday was a day to honor workers and labors across the state and country.

Workers' Memorial Day was celebrated in East Galesburg with some speakers and a cook out supper.

Ric Fielder is the president of local AFSME Union #1173 and said attendance was the best he had seen.

"Thanks again, this is I think the best turnout we've ever had, it's really nice that everybody showed up."

Knox County Board Chairman Greg Bacon was one of the attendees and tells WGIL, safety should always come first.

"You have to remember it everyday, the job I do you have to remember safety too everyday, every time you don something you have to remember the safe way to do it. I don't think it's over looked but I think sometimes time constraints come in like that and pushing stuff like that to try and make it go faster, but you have to step back and do it the safe way. Might take a little more time, but you're going to get done in one piece."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 137,000 Illinoisans suffered workplace injuries in 2009 and 158 people were actually killed on the job.
