Service Groups Trying to Avoid Budget Cuts
(IRN)-Human services organizations in Illinois say they have suffered enough. Several groups were represented at a statehouse news conference at which Ralph Martire, executive director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, described what he said were easy ways to spare the cuts.

The people trying to make up the budget have competing estimates of the amount of money coming in, and Martire says they should go with the larger one, since it comes from the state's Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability. Martire also advocates the state decouple from federal depreciation rules.

Providers and clients described how state funding is vital. Paralee Stewart of Centerville says budget cuts can be deadly; her son, a schizophrenic, committed suicide at 25: "Please do not let the families throughout Illinois … (bury) their loved one," she said.
