City's Fourth Fire in a Month
Galesburg fire crews responded to what turned out to be a small fire Friday morning that turned out to be the fourth blaze a crew has responded to this month.

Fire Chief Tom Simkins says crews were called to a house in the 400 block of North Broad Street around 2:10 Friday morning, after he says smoke appeared to be coming from the home's basement and kitchen area.

Simkins says it was later determined that a small fire had broken out in the basement in the area of a dryer, and had mostly put itself out.

"The fire extended up into the kitchen area, they have a lot of smoke damage in the house but not a tremendous amount of fire damage other than the basement so the house was saved and they'll be able to redo the house, but the biggest lesson of course was the smoke detectors alerting and the father getting people out of the house and doing the right things."

Crews got the fire under control in less than 10 minutes, he says, because a lack of oxygen kept the fire from getting bigger.

The fire is believe to be an accident and no one was hurt.
