Dental Day Serves a Growing Need
Knox County residents lined up early Friday morning for free dental services put together by the Knox County Health Department.

A Free Adult Dental Day went from 8 a.m.5 p.m. at the Carl Sandburg Community College Annex on East Main Street.

Deb Dalton of Galesburg tells WGIL she has been waiting for such an opportunity for a long time.

"It's really helpful, I was shocked that they hadn't had it before this because for the last few years we've seen it on TV that they're doing it all over the country so I was really shocked that it took Galesburg this long, because Galesburg has probably been hurting longer than a lot of communities with all the job losses here."

Toby Stambaugh of Abingdon tells WGIL he is self employed and that makes it difficult to afford dental insurance, which is why he took advantage of the free day.

"Well, I'm pretty thankful for it, that's for sure, there is a need around here for more than just dental care."

About 130 volunteers helped throughout the day as well as 12 dentists who served 134 patients. Early estimated suggest $35,000 dollars in services were provided Friday.

Because the department was anticipating such a large crowd, they activated the county's incident commander center to help coordinate the workers with the event.
