IL Fire Marshal Marks Arson Awareness Week
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois State Fire Marshal's office is marking Arson Awareness Week with a focus on serial arsonists.

Arson Awareness Week starts Sunday.
A serial arsonist is defined as someone who intentionally sets three or more fires.

The Illinois Advisory Committee on Arson Prevention provides rewards of up to $2,500 for information that leads to the arrest or conviction of an arsonist.

Nationwide, intentionally set fires account for 13 percent of the fires responded to by departments. They cause an average of 375 deaths, 1,300 injuries and more than $1 billion in property loss each year.

In Illinois, more than 100 people were arrested for arson in 2010.
