Durbin Stands Behind Obama Re-electon Bid
(IRN)-After President Obama announced Monday that he is officially seeking a second term in office, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he will do all he can to see the president re-elected.

While Obama has had to deal with crises on a global level, such as the unrest in Libya and natural disasters in Japan and elsewhere, leaving him little choice but to stray from his core agenda, Durbin says it shouldn't hurt his re-election bid.

"I think the American people understand no president can control world events or even national events," Durbin said. "You have to deal with them, you know, and he's done that. He's faced things that no one would have predicted."

The Obama campaign team has an ambitious goal of raising $1 billion for the campaign, a sign of the times, says Durbin.

"You know, when you say $1 billion, I don't know if that is the true goal or just an ambition, but, you know, last time it was over $700 million that was spent so it's an indication of the expense of running a nationwide campaign, the expense of media and I think it's probably an indication of what the goal will be and probably will be reached," Durbin said.

As for Republicans, there still isn't a clear front-runner on who would challenge Obama. Asked if the president's announcement would push Republicans to make a decision on candidates, Durbin says no.
