Preventing Injuries Highlights Public Health Week
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois' Department of Public Health is urging residents to take steps to prevent one of the nation's leading causes of death.

It's injuries, and federal officials say it's the nation's most costly medical problem in medical care and lost productivity.

In honor of National Public Health week this week, Illinois' public health chief Dr. Damon Arnold has issued a list of ways to prevent injuries.

These include maintaining smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at home; using protective gear if required at work; wearing helmets or other safety gear during sports; and avoiding texting while driving.

In Illinois, the most recent statistics show more than 6,000 people died from injuries in 2007 and almost 1,100 died from unintentional poisonings. That amounts to about three people a day.
