IL Gears Up for Possibility of Floods
CHICAGO (AP) -- Sandbags, trucks and manpower are standing by should floods strike.

That's the message from Illinois officials as the state enters prime flood season as rain and melted snow swell rivers.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency says it's already pre-positioned more than 2 million sandbags in western Illinois for use by communities along the flood-prone Mississippi River. Another million are being kept in reserve elsewhere.

IEMA Director Jonathon Monken says authorities are being proactive. That has included holding meetings with hundreds of emergency management officials.

Gov. Pat Quinn's office says some areas are already seeing rivers above flood stage. And it says the state's already provided nearly 170,000 sandbags to several communities.

Quinn says people in areas with a history of floods also need to start thinking ahead about potential risks.
