Attorney General: U of I Breaking Records Law
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the University of Illinois is in violation of the state's public records law by withholding information about its search for a new president.

Madigan said in a binding opinion Friday that the university must release records requested under the Freedom of Information Act by The (Champaign) News-Gazette or ask for a court review within 35 days.

A university spokesman told the newspaper it hasn't decided how to respond.
The newspaper requested travel records and other information about the university's search for a replacement for President Joseph White. The university refused to release information because it argued travel records could reveal the identities of applicants who didn't get the job to their current employers.

The university last summer named Michael Hogan its new president.
