Water and Sewer Rates May Go Up in Knoxville
The City of Knoxville essentially could be forced to do something it hasn't done in at least five years: raise water and sewer rates.

The Knoxville City Council last night put on first reading a measure to raise the rates by 75 cents per 1,000 gallons used, in order to start making up what is at least a $22,000 shortfall in those areas.

Alderman Ed Mahar says the increase is needed, in part, because of two costs the city hasn't had before.

"$2,800 in water testing fees per year that we didn't have before. Our contract with Bock went into the third year this September, that goes up $8,000 because we held the line for the first two years so it takes a good size jump."

Bock is the Kewanee based company that runs the city's water and sewer plants. Those costs are in addition to money that will be needed for water tower and sewer work being planned.

The measure could be voted on in two weeks.
Aldermen last night did approve money for the Knox County Scenic Drive for advertising, and they also approved some raises for city employees.
