Council Approves Tourism Chamber of Commerce Agreement
Galesburg city council members have entered into an agreement with the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

Under a Tourism Promotion Agreement, the chamber will receive about 43 percent of the revenue from the hotel-motel tax, or about $171,000.

During Monday night's city council meeting Mayor Salvador Garza said the agreement had been terminated in the past and the new language clears things up.

"Little bit of a clarification is, sometime in early 2000 this agreement was terminated and a new agreement was never crafted. Direction was given to city administration, somewhere along the line I'm not sure what happened but that agreement never came back to city council for review and for approval so this is why we find ourselves here [Monday]."

For the first time, the agreement also requires the chamber to create and maintain a tourism marketing program for the city and the Knox County Area.

Council members unanimously approved the measure and Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming said the city was getting a great bargain for what the chamber is able to do for Galesburg through the Connvention and Visitors Bureau.

Alderman also approved a $1 lease agreement with the chamber for the Welcome Center on Main Street. The lease allows the Conncention and Visitor's Bureau to use the building, but all maintenance is the responsibility of the chamber.
