Knoxville Grant Application Gaining Momentum
The City of Knoxville has received some good news as it looks toward nearly a million dollars in upgrades to its water and sewer systems.

City Engineer Kevan Cooper told the City Council Monday night a grant application to the Environmental Protection Agency to cover the cost of what will be mandated upgrades is moving through the system.

But Cooper says it seems like the feds like the plan.

"They have reviewed the plan and reported the project is technically appropriate and cost effective, so what that means is we've passed a step in the hurdle here, in the process."

Cooper says before the grant application can keep going forward, the public will get the chance to voice their concerns about the project.

"We'll have to publish this notice and wait for ten days for public comment and then we'll be able to continue in completing the lone application project and proceed with getting bids."

The city is applying for the grant under a program expiring this year that would only require the city to pay back 75 percent of what they're asking for.

Aldermen Tuesday night formally okayed spending $97,000 in Motor Fuel Tax funds to repair city streets this summer, and they approved a six percent contribution into the city's simplified employee retirement program.
