Overnight Frost May be Negating Early Planting
Temperatures in the 70s and 80s for much of the past month has jump-started the planting season for many farmers, but the most recent weather may be a cause for concern.

Brad Schwab is the Director of the Illinois Field Office of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. He says the freezing overnight temperatures this week could damage any crops that have emerged.

"I don't think we're out of the woods yet completely on this early planting and emerged corn," Schwab said. "There's certainly concern, especially in the northern regions of the state, if they've gotten any up there that has emerged, what temperatures they're going to see."

A freeze warning is in effect until 8 A-M Wednesday morning, with the National Weather Service predicteing more frost after midnight Wednesday evening.

Schwab says 17-percent of corn has been planted across the state, with 2-percent of that emerging. According to Schwab, that's compared to only 3-percent planted at this time last year.

For those farmers haven't planted yet, he says it's because of that fear of more freezing conditions to come.
