District-217 Looks to Beef Up Security
The Abingdon school district is locking down on it's security measures to create a safer environment for students, teachers, and parents.

The District-217 Board of Education Wednesday night agreed to apply for a $50,000 matching grant with the state to install new security systems at the schools.

Superintendent David Black says the backbone to the project will be to synchronize all locks and place cameras at the main entrances.

"The main idea here is that we would have a box at the door, where if you want to enter and you're not an employee with a badge or a pass key of some kind, you would hit the button, the secretary then would see you, can buzz you in, or can actually ask what your business is," Black said. "And all the other doors will be locked."

Black says pass keys will be available for employees to gain entry into either of the district's buildings without having to buzz in at the front.

He says the need to beef up security in Abingdon is for safety reasons, but also because it's become especially a problem during football season that doors are being propped open.

The proposal includes a contact switcher that would provide a screened image of every door and their position throughout the district.
