County Health Rankings Reveal Middle of the Pack Standing for Knox
Knox County health care ranks in the middle of the pack among 102 counties in the recently released 2012 Illinois standings.

In the program's third year in existence, the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps ranks Knox 59th, only one spot worse from last year, but six spots down from 2010.

Community Health Educator at the Knox County Health Department Erin Olson says the results shouldn't strike up comparisons. She says the statistics should fuel ways to improve areas like nutrition, mental health, and access to health care.

"That we have to look at how we want to do it, and we have to do it as a community and as a county together," Olson said. "This is one piece of the puzzle that has to fit into a much larger puzzle. It's going to take a lot of different people and a lot of different facets to get there."

"So hopefully our numbers won't change as drastically (in the future)."

The bottom-third ranking did give way to some good news at Thursday night's Knox County board of health meeting.

The board learned the health department is one of eight in the state to receive a $6,000 public health grant. Officials say they will use it towards an intervention program to increase health activities in the county.
