City Council Takes Quiet Zone-related Votes Monday
The Galesburg City Council will take up what has quickly become a hot-button topic Monday, despite the fact it's been in the city's plans for years.

Aldermen Monday evening will take up proposals to close seven rail crossings in town and the streets around them, as part of an ongoing effort to get the city federal quiet zone designations.

City officials say most of the closures will occur at crossings along the Chilicothe subdivision of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks in town, while the closures that will occur first are along the Mendota line.

Those are along South Chambers and North Pearl Streets, and are slated to be closed next month.

The next set will be closed in October, and are along North West and North Cherry Streets. Then, in October of next year, Crossings along North Kellogg, North Pearl, and North Streets will be closed.

The city is set to receive over a half-million dollars in state and railroad money to pay for circuitry upgrades at those crossings as a result -- that's if the city council also approves the mayor signing an agreement to that end Monday.

Some aldermen have said they didn't really know what the city's specific plans were, despite touring the proposed closure areas. Other aldermen have said the project needs to move ahead, and there's been plenty of time for talking.

The Galesburg City Council meets at 6:30 Monday night inside council chambers at Galesburg City Hall.
