Raises Coming for Knoxville City Employees
Employees in the city of Knoxville will see a bump in their paychecks.come next month.

Monday night the Knoxville City Council approved raising workers' pay by two-point-five-percent across the board by a six to one vote. The lone "no" vote was cast by Third Ward Alderman Ed Mahar.

Second Ward Alderman Dennis Maurer first suggested only a two-percent raise for part-time city employees. However the Fourth Ward's Tom Worden felt part-time workers are often as experienced and hard working, thus just as deserving of the two-and-a-half-percent. His Fourth Ward mate, Dave Malone, had his back.

"I kind of agree with Tom, I don't know if it's called discrimination or not, but you know you pay them two different wages," Malone said. '(Is it) discrimination against a part-timer by not giving them the two and a half percent raise?"

The pay raises will become effective May first for the roughly thirty people employed by Knoxville.

In other City Council news, Acting Mayor Bob Johnson says the public library was inspected for mold last Friday and those results to be in by the end of this week.

The city's engineer recommended the inspection after the council learned the building would need to be tuck-pointed before a new town clock could be hung from the corner of the library.
