New Overpass Gets Tagged with Vandalism Act
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 4/18/12 Now that Galesburg's West Main Street Overpass is bulking up in it's physical appearance, allegedly so are the graffiti artists.

City Engineer Wayne Carl says red and white graffiti was discovered Monday morning across a couple freshly painted panels on one of the retaining walls that had just gone up. He tells WGIL this act of vandalism WASN'T unexpected.

"We had discussed it at some public meetings ahead of time, we knew it was likely to occur," Carl said. "I was hoping we'd get the cameras in place before people were thinking of that idea, but apparently they were thinking about it before we were done."

"Hopefully when the cameras get installed that would deter any future markings on the wall."

Carl says surveillance cameras will be installed on both sides of the bridge as early as July, and will be routed directly to the police department.

He says crews are investigating ways to remove the graffiti-- either by sand blasting, power washing, graffiti removal, or perhaps a combination of those.
