Sandburg Days Reunites Biographer with Icon's Homeland
She stayed close to Carl Sandburg, and says she never wanted to let him go.

Penelope Niven has traveled back to Galesburg after writing a biography of the historic figure twenty-one years ago. She'll be participating in the remainder of the scheduled events for the "Sandburg Days Festival For the Mind."

Niven says Sandburg was unavoidable once she encountered his life's story. She's authored additional works on Edward Steichen and a book on Thornton Wilder will be released in October. She tells the WGIL Morning News each of them are captivating in similar ways.

"They all have worked in such original ways to transform the medium that they chose for their life's work," Niven said. "Sandburg changed the landscape of American poetry, American biography, (and) American folk music."

Niven is a North Carolina native who's visited Sandburg's final home there in the mountains countless times. During her research of the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, she says there's nothing better than touching the exact letters the poet once physically transcribed himself.

Sandburg Days runs through Saturday with various events being held in Galesburg, including at Knox and Carl Sandburg College, and Sandburg's historic birthplace site. A full rundown of the remaining activities can be found at sandburg.edu/festival.
