Durbin Criticized Peoria Bishop
(IRN) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is displeased with the remarks of the bishop of Peoria.

Bishop Daniel Jenky, in a homily a week ago, likened President Obama to Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler, saying Obama, like the communists and Nazis, wants to marginalize the church. Durbin, the President's staunchest ally, responded:

"I would just say that it is truly unfortunate that the bishop in Peoria would use those historic references in some sort of critique of the Obama administration, and to do that from the pulpit I think goes way too far," Durbin said.

The bishop said the president wants to prevent the church from competing with the government in education, health care and social services. Durbin notes that the job of president is different from the job of bishop. The president is in charge of a government that must serve everyone.

The bishop also attacked politicians who "pretend to be Catholic in church, but in their public lives, rather like Judas Iscariot, betray Jesus by how they vote, and how they willingly cooperate with intrinsic evil."

The bishop didn't name Durbin, but the shoe fits. Durbin said he has been criticized by church hierarchy before as a "cafeteria Catholic," but he says the cafeteria is crowded with Catholics who have profound differences of opinion with the church.
