Fire Damages Vacant Galesbug Home
Galesburg police and firefighters are continuing an investigation into a morning fire Wednesday that damaged a home which has a "for sale" sign in the front yard.

Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins says crews were called to 435 Franklin Avenue just after 7:05am Wednesday after a Waste Management employee on his route noticed smoke billowing from the home.

Simkins says the fire started in the central living room area and started to hit the second floor of the one-and-a-half story home, but firefighters got the fire out within five minutes of arriving.

Most of the damage was confined to that living room area.

Simkins says no was inside at the time of the fire since it was supposed to be an empty home, and no one was hurt.

A fire truck remained on scene into the late-morning Wednesday, as police and fire investigators alike continued their work.

A cause has yet to be determined.

(The home at 435 Franklin Avenue is listed as "For Sale.")
