Per Diem Raises for County Board Denied
An increase in per diems for Knox County Board members was struck down by a majority vote at Wednesday night's monthly meeting.

Eleven board members tallied votes against the measure, while four supported $15-dollar pay raise for attending meetings.

District-One Democrat Lyle Johnson was one of those in favor.

"When you look around and see what everybody else is paying their county's board members, I think some of it is just recognition of what we do and what we offer the county in terms of what we get."

But Cheryl Nache says if the county's financial constraints have caused the board to consider a hiring freeze next year, then it's unethical to bump up per diems to $50-dollars.

The board can challenge Wednesday night's decision of denying the pay raises one final time next month. The county chairman's salary of $4,120 dollars could be amended then also.

In other news, the county board did not vote on the union contract for landfill workers as the item was scratched from the agenda. Board Chair Greg Bacon says the union hasn't yet ratified it themselves.
