Abingdon School Board Fills in the Blanks on Proposed Consolidation
The Abingdon School District's board of education hosted a special meeting Monday night to bring the district's stakeholders up to speed on their consolidation proposal with Avon.

The public embraced the opportunity to separate the middle school from the high school, and didn't offer many objections to a potential merger. The board's Vice President Sherry Lomax did answer one concern on a tax hike for residents.

"We will be spending the tax money more responsibly for the people that are paying their taxes," Lomax said. "And there are some people that I know are strapped, but we're farmers and we pay that big tax bill just like everybody else."

If an Avon and Abingdon consolidation would pass on the general election ballot, the tax base would be expanded to 72-percent. District-217 board members say this would lessen the blow to decreasing federal and state aid.

The District-176 board held a public forum Monday night as well to discuss whether to pursue consolidating with Abingdon or Bushnell-Prairie City. They will make a formal selection Tuesday evening.

To have either consolidation on November's ballot, a petition must be filed by May 7th.
