City Council Debates Quiet Zone Plans
Members of the Galesburg City Council apparently aren't too keen on the plans to close at least three rail crossings in town as the city seeks federal quiet zone status.

Aldermen debated the plans for about an hour Monday night, even though a final vote on the measure isn't for a couple of weeks.

Aldermen took issue with traffic patterns in the area of Chambers and Pearl Streets, West and Cherry Streets, and Kellogg, North, and Pearl Streets, some claiming they don't understand what the city is trying to do when the crossings in those areas are closed.

But First Ward Alderman Ken Goad said it's past time to debate that now.

"I think we need to be really careful about trying to change too much now, and perhaps stopping what progress (that) has been made," Goad said. "I think it's important we have our questions answered, but I think there's been ample time for our questions to be answered."

Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming disagreed, because when aldermen a year ago toured the areas where the rail crossing closures are to occur, the plans weren't as formal as they are now.

If the feds approve quiet zone status, trains would not be allowed to blow their whistles in those areas, something residents said last night was still needed.
