Avon Picks Abingdon to Pursue District Consolidation
The Avon School District has chosen to pursue consolidating with Abingdon, and not Bushnell-Prairie City.

Tuesday night the District-176 Board of Education agreed to lock arms with District-217 towards a general election vote.

Avon Superintendent Dan Oakley tells WGIL he's pleased with the board's decision, and feels there's a strong and viable school district to be had.

"We were in the position of being lucky enough to be able to have a good choice, instead of having to say 'well this is the card we've been dealt and we have to go with it,'" Oakley said. "So we had two possible partners to go with, and we obviously had to make a choice. In this particular case, the willingness to offer some things to the Avon community kind of swayed the vote."

Oakley's speaking on Abingdon's offer to utilize the present day Avon Junior High and High School building as a central location for all junior high students.

District-170 Superintendent David Messersmith surrendered to the board that Bushnell-Prairie City residents wouldn't agree to this element.

A meeting for all interested Committee of Ten members will be held in Avon Wednesday night, and Abingdon Thursday.
