City Council Considers Some Traffic Light Upgrades
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 4/4/12 The Illinois Department of Transportation wants to help the City of Galesburg upgrade some of its traffic lights to make some intersections safer.

IDOT Engineer Randy Laninga told the Galesburg City Council Monday night wants the city council's support in installing traffic lights with yellow left-turn arrows at some intersections along Routes 150 and 41 that go through Galesburg.

And Laninga says that's not the only place, and the only way, such lights have worked.

"It reduces, in all instances...the left turn crashes," Laninga said. "And it promotes a consistency throughout the country. Over 40 states now have signalized intersections that have the flashing yellow arrow. Some of the states have made it a requirement on all new installations to have them."

Laninga says the project would be paid for mostly with federal money, about 90-percent. Another five-percent would come from the state, and if approved by the City Council, the last five-percent or $9,000 would come from the city.

IDOT wants the city to decide as soon as possible so work could begin this summer. Aldermen will take up the measure in a few weeks.
