Local Runner a Week Away from Boston Marathon
It's crunch time for one local runner who's taking on next week's Boston Marathon for a second year in a row.

Karen Brophy is an assistant coach with the Carl Sandburg College Track and Field team. While training for the twenty-six-point-two mile race, she says her mileage gets up to ninety during her heavy weeks.

Brophy tells the WGIL Morning News sometimes that means running twice in one day.

"That's how you get it all in, I couldn't imagine going out and running twenty miles a day or something like that," Brophy said. "My longest run ended up being probably twenty-two miles, and I had never done that before. My longest was usually twenty, and it was just usually one of those for the longer runs.

"But I did a few twenty mile runs this time around, and a twenty-two miler."

Brophy says she downs a lot of carbs, fruits and veggies in preparing for a marathon. She says she occasionally snacks on junk food too, and is most addicted to fruit roll-ups.

As for next Monday's run in Boston, Brophy says she hopes for wet, rainy, and cooler conditions to compete in. Last year she says her time came in a few minutes under three and a half hours.
