| Local Business a Success, Contest or Not |
UPDATED 9:10am 4/9/12 No matter whether she wins or loses a National Retail Federation competition regarding the successes of local businesses, a Monmouth businesswoman and former journalist has already proven to be a winner in less than a year's time. Susan Kaufman of Market Alley Wines found out Monday morning she has moved on to the next round of a sort-of bracket-based contest put on through the website of the National Retail Federation. For most of the past several days, she's been either in or close to a tie with the business she and her online video are competing in, and now, she's in the top 10. But the wine shop itself has proven to be very successful and it hasn't been open even a year yet. Kaufman tells WGIL that itself is very gratifying.
"Monmouth has just been extremely supportive," Kaufman said. "And we wouldn't be here without our great customers."
Kaufman says she has a simple philosophy about her store.
"I designed this after things that I like, and I like to go in some place where everything's different and it's clean, and it's comfortable and an owner knows me and knows what I'm like. And that's what I try to do."
If there's one thing Kaufman says she's learned in the year she's had Market Alley wines open: wear more comfortable shoes, because chances are you'll be on your feet a lot. In addition to wine, Market Alley also sells specialty beers and other items, and is a home to live entertainment on Monmouth's Public Square fairly regularly. |
