Access to Better Communications Could be Coming
The City of Galesburg says work began Monday on a project that could lead to some better cell phone access.

City officials say broadband fiber optic cable is being installed along various city streets.

Among the areas being targeted are North Henderson Street and Linwood Road, Linwood and West Fremont, various sections of West and East Main Streets, Fremont and Farnham Streets, and others.

The city says three crews are in town doing the work for Texas-based contractor Broadband Specialists, and they expect to have the work done by the end of the month. They're installing the lines to provide what's being called a "backbone" for cellular phone companies. The Galesburg City Council approved the work last week, because it involves using city rights of way.

It's not a city project, but city officials say four of the lines are being installed at no charge for internal city communications. There would be a cost, however, when the city is ready to officially connect to them.
