Hare Likes 2008 Farm Bill Proposal

A very good piece of legislation -- that's how a local congressman refers to the farm bill that he and his colleagues are expected to vote on Wednesday.

17th District Democrat Phil Hare says there is a lot he likes in the new Farm Bill: expanded food security, promoting healthier foods and food networks, and expanded bio-fuel programs.

In a conference call with reporters Tuesday, Hare said the main reason he likes the Farm Bill, though, is because farmers in his district like it because it provides a grain price safety net

Hare says what's more, he likes that the farm bill will extend $5.4 billion in food stamps, $1.25 billion in assistance for food banks, and $10 billion for school nutrition programs.

The bill also calls for country of origin labeling for beef and produce, which Hare calls big, especially for beef producers.
