Soggy Farm Fields Continue to Slow Crop Planting

Wet weather was again the dominant factor in Illinois farm fields last week.

The USDA's weekly crop progress and weather report says only 6 percent of this year's corn crop is in the ground.

Brad Schwab, chief crop statistician at the USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service Illinois Field Office, says rain continues to hold back planting so far this season, with just 6 percent of the corn crop in the ground so far.  That's down substantially from the 29 percent planted by this time last year and the five-year average of 55 percent.

Schwab says only two percent of Illinois' topsoil moisture is rated short or very short, while 51 percent is reported surplus.
