Rain Doesn't Slow Illinois Crops

The amount of corn planted across Illinois more than doubled last week, despite the rain.  The weekly crop progress report from the USDA indicates 60 percent of the corn crop in the state has been planted as of Sunday, up from 28-percent the week before, and is compared to the five-year average of 88-percent.

Illinois Chief Crop Statistician Brad Schwab says you can't help but be pleased with what farmers were able to do.  "I was really impressed with the progress that they made last week in planting," Schwab said.  "I mean, 32 percentage points they advanced -- that's incredible for having just four days to do it in."

Schwab says, however, that was the silver lining in the big, gray cloud.  "However, the gray, wet side of Mother Nature swept into the state over the weekend, parking planters for at least another three disappointing days," Schwab said.

Statewide, however, corn planting is only at seven-percent complete -- locally, that's at about five-percent.

Here in the Western crop reporting district in Illinois, the report says there were five-days suitable for field work, resulting in 64-percent of the corn crop being planted and soil moisture was reported 59-percent rated as adequate, and 33-percent reported as surplus.
