Next Stop for Caboose: Knox County Nursing Home

A familiar piece of train history will soon have a new home.  Crews are working to disassemble an old CB&Q caboose parked as a display next to the Galesburg Amtrak train station, so it can be moved to the Knox County Nursing Home.

Nursing Home administrator Mary Ann Wiesen has been watching the work being done today, and tells WGIL getting a caboose that could be placed at the nursing home has been a long time coming.  "Marcia Bullis is in Rotary with me," Wiesen said, "and one thing led to another, and her brother Jay had the caboose down (near the Amtrak Station), and they really wanted a different caboose.  It's kind of like buying a new car.  So they agreed to sell us the caboose at a very, very reduced price, for which we were very grateful."

Wiesen says residents at the nursing home are already anticipating seeing the caboose laid on tracks Burlington Northern Santa Fe volunteers donated time to put up there.

Once it's put back together and up at the nursing home, officials say they hope to work with local students to re-paint and re-decorate the caboose.
