River Bridge at Burlington Open to Vehicle Traffic Again

Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation have reopened the U-S Route 34 bridge at Burlington to vehicle traffic following a collision early Thursday morning.

Reports indicate inspections of the span that carries vehicle traffic from the Illinois side of the Mississippi River into Iowa were satisfactory and no serious damage occurred.  Officials closed the bridge after barges broke loose from a staging area around 12:40 a-m Thursday and collided with a pier on the bridge.

Officials say one of the wayward barges continued down the swollen river and struck a BNSF Railroad crossing bridge, which remained closed as of late this morning.  Once inspectors clear the bridge as safe, rail traffic will resume there.
