School Officials Worrying About State Aid Payments

School district administrators worry each year that state aid payments due during the last month of the fiscal year will either be late or not received at all, and this year is no different.

District 217 Superintendent Dr. Magie Stuart told the school board Wednesday night that it's possible two state aid payments that schools typically get in June may not make it to the school district by the start of the new fiscal year in July. The state's financial crisis has school administrators and others that are highly dependent on state aid wondering what will happen next.

Stuart said it'll be tough times for Abingdon and other school districts if they don't receive the state payments.  "That being said, I don't know that we've had what I call a normal year in Abingdon since I've been here," Stuart said.  She said there's been years local taxes were late, and the district's dealt with issues related to state aid payments in the past.  Stuart said all District 217 can do is deal with the situation as it comes along.

In other business, the school board unanimously approved milk and bread bids. The low milk bid was from Jerry's Dairy and the only bread bid was submitted by IBC. The board also approved amendments to the budget, which will be on display for 30 days.
