Gas Prices Hit Record High

The price of gasoline is up 44 cents over the last month and is expected to hit $4 a gallon soon.

According to the monthly survey by the AAA Chicago Motor Club, the statewide average is $3.89 a gallon, compared to $3.45 in April.

Nicole Niemi, spokeswoman for Triple-A, says drivers are not surprised at the price of gasoline in Illinois.  "I don't think people are surprised, but I still think that they're dismayed," Niemi said.  "There's just something about seeing it inch toward $4 a gallon, that I think makes most people's hearts sink."

The blame is being put on crude oil, which is now trading near $125 a barrel compared to September of 2004, when many thought it was a big deal when crude oil hit $50 a barrel.

The current price for a gallon of unleaded gas in the Galesburg area is now at $3.89 a gallon -- an increase as of Thursday.
