Armory and TIF Districts on Galesburg Agenda

The City of Galesburg may officially take ownership of a property that was offered to it almost a year and a half ago.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night will be asked to formally accept as its own the former National Guard Armory on North Broad Street.

Documents provided to the council indicate that the city has thoroughly investigated the opportunity, and determined that if the armory is accepted, roof repairs, and asbestos and lead-based paint removal will likely be needed, and most of the work would have to be approved by the state Historical Preservation Agency.

The city says the building would likely be re-marketed to potential users, if they took ownership of it.

The armory was closed when the Galesburg and Monmouth National Guard units moved to the new Readiness Center on Linwood Road last year.

The City of Monmouth has already taken ownership of that city's guard armory after a similar offer was made.

Also Monday night, the council will consider the redevelopment plans public hearings have already been held in regards to two tax increment financing districts on the city's eastern end.

The Galesburg City Council will convene in open session at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers at Galesburg City Hall, following a 6:30 p.m. closed session.
