Eye Exams Needed for Children Prior to Fall
Starting this fall, children need proof of vaccines, dental exams, and eye exams to enroll in Illinois schools for the first time. A new law has added eye exams to the mix.

Optometrists including Drs. Peter Kehoe of Galesburg, Charlotte Neilson of Grayslake, and Illinois Optometric Association executive director Mike Horstman are now encouraging parents to make appointments soon.  Kehoe is President-Elect of the American Optometric Association.

They say vision screenings aren’t enough, and can miss one third of vision problems.  They also say they’ll get all kids in the door before the Oct. 15 deadline, although they’re still trying to recruit more optometrists to accept Medicaid-eligible children.  Schools can withhold report cards if a kid hasn’t had an eye exam.
