Surprise! $4 Gas Hits Galesburg

Most area residents say they're going to try and get by the best they can now that the price of a gallon of gas in the Galesburg area has hit $4 a gallon, but that doesn't necessarily mean they like it.

Some Galesburg-area gas stations are now officially at $4 a gallon, while others still have moved up to $3.96; either way, the price of gas has increased another dime or more, just in time for the holiday weekend.

Resident Mike Goulding was filling up at the East Main Street Circle-K Thursday afternoon where gas hit $4, and tells WGIL he's just going to make his tank of gas last as long as he can.  "I don't do much travelling.  Back and forth to work is about all you can afford anymore," Goulding said.  "Just stay home pretty much, or ride with friends, that's all you can do."

Meantime, at The Junction just outside Knoxville at the intersection of Route 150 and County Highway 10, Knoxville resident Linda Rice tells WGIL the price of gas affects her now, but it really will later.  "I only work in Galesburg," Rice said, "but when basketball season is in session, and you're going to Rockridge and Sherrard, it's going to hurt."

Rice had just paid $77 to fill up two of her family's cars. A number of Galesburg filling stations were still between $3.85 and $3.90 a gallon, at least for awhile yesterday afternoon when others made the historic jump, resulting in some very long lines.
