Tourism Good in Galesburg Last Year

A local tourism official believes efforts to get more people to visit Galesburg have been going strong, but they may not necessarily always be that way.

Galesburg-Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Diane Bruening told the Galesburg City Council this week that as far as she's concerned, 2007 was "fantastic" citing a growing number of events, that all went above and beyond the call to improve in various ways and get more people to come to town.

Bruening says one of the prime examples of increased tourism is how many people are staying at local hotels and motels.  "Our hotel-motel tax increased in 2007 over 2006 by 12%," Bruening said.  "This was an increase of 14,360 room nights sold in 2007 over 2006."

Bruening says that equates to nearly 129,000 hotel rooms sold last year, which she also calls fantastic.

She says, however, that most tourism experts in the state predict that with the price of gas near four-dollars a gallon, and the overall economy close to, if not in a recession, numbers will start to drop off, but that doesn't mean their efforts to bring more people to town will.
