"Pay to Play" Legislation Approved in Illinois Senate
Tony Rezko awaits a jury verdict in a government corruption trial.  Gov. Rod Blagojevich held a campaign fundraiser Thursday night in Chicago. Friday, the Illinois Senate passed ethics legislation. Are these related? Lots of state lawmakers think so.

The Senate's version bans state contractors with at least $50,000 in state business from giving campaign donations to the officeholder over the contract. Several senators—some Republican, some Democratic—say the bill doesn't go far enough, and wouldn’t even have prevented the kind of pay-to-play allegations asserted in the Rezko trial. The measure passed unanimously, but it faces two more hurdles:  House consideration and a possible governor's veto.

In a signal that the plan faces tough hurdles, Blagojevich spokeswoman Rebecca Rausch says the governor wants the House to make the measure tougher, but there is no word on whether that means he'll alter or completely veto the bill.
